It feels like just yesterday we finished dealing with the Covid-19 virus pandemic. And now, out of nowhere, a new variant flu virus has emerged, it called Superflu A(H3N2).

What is Superflu?
Due to the surge in seasonal influenza cases caused by this A(H3N2) variant, the term "superflu" has emerged. However, its threat level is not as frightening as the virus's nickname. This nickname was given because of the rapid spread of the virus and the simultaneous increase in cases in many countries. This variant is already under the monitoring of the World Health Organization (WHO). They also assesses that this variant does not pose a threat level as dangerous as COVID-19.

The symtomps?
Similar to the common symptoms of existing flu viruses, Superflu, or influenza A(H3N2) subclade K, generally exhibits the following symptoms:
High fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Weakness
  • Headache and muscle aches

How it spread?

The virus spreads through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Transmission can also occur through direct contact with a contaminated surface and then touching the face, nose, or mouth, similar with most influenza flu viruses.

Is it dangerous as Covid19?

No, this virus does not pose dangerous threat as Covid19. As the control protocol used on this virus is not complicated like Covid19.

Has it started spreading in Indonesia?

According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the virus was detected in Indonesia in August 2025 through the ILI-SARI surveillance system and Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS). By the end of December 2025, 62 cases of influenza A(H3N2) subclade K had been recorded across eight provinces. The provinces with the highest number of cases were East Java, South Kalimantan, and West Java.

So what are the preventive steps?

The steps taken by the Indonesian Ministry of Health together with health authorities are as follows:

  • Annual Immunization

Annual influenza vaccination remains recommended, especially for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions. This vaccine can reduce the risk of serious illness and hospitalization.

  • Practice a Clean and Healthy Lifestyle.
  • Maintain adequate nutrition.

Conclusion

This virus earned the name "superflu" because of its rapid spread, rather than high level of danger like COVID-19. Nevertheless, we should still keep standard health protocols for ourselfs, as its effects will still disrupt the activities and productivity of those who affected. Stay healty fellows!(WR)
